	Fun Palaces&#38;nbsp;

	3D paper and card sculptures with sparkle using simple electronics

	Working with children and their families and carers is always a special and fun experience. Recently I supported Domme Ewan (Cable Punks) to facilitate their creative event as part of the Fun Palaces 2025 weekend.

For Cable Punk’s session at LEVEL centre visitors were encouraged to create their own unique cardboard fun palace. At times over the years Domme Ewan has assisted me when running my own AllSensesArt workshops so this time it was so good to be able to give some support back.

These photographs are just a small sample of the wonderful fun palaces that were created on the day.
So much can be done with such simple materials. And the finishing touch was to share some electronics knowledge to add LED lights.

	Card Making&#38;nbsp; - SEND

	My weekly card making enrichment sessions were especially popular with the young people.

	During the school year 2024- 25, while I was Special Needs Teacher at another Nexus MAT school, I ran weekly enrichment sessions for students from Key Stages 4 and 5 (15 to 18 year olds).&#38;nbsp;
For the Friday Enrichment sessions I taught: dance classes; simple cake decorating classes, and in the Summer term, card making classes. The card making sessions were particularly popular with the students.&#38;nbsp;

The structured step-by-step approach that I use when teaching these sort of creative lessons works well for young people with special neeeds. My students for this year all had severe learning difficulties. Many were Autistic (some non-speaking) and others had other complex needs.&#38;nbsp;

Students really enjoy creative activities and most also love using sensory materials. Anxiety is reduced by first showing students a finished card and then demonstrating the stages of making it.&#38;nbsp;

I have found that making a video of myself demonstrating the process&#38;nbsp; and showing this to the students on the big classroom screen can be even more effective than my in person demonstration in front of&#38;nbsp; them.&#38;nbsp; This is one technique that I have used to make teaching more accessible, especially for autistic students. They are even more interested when the person in the video is their teacher or one of the classroom staff who they are already familiar with.&#38;nbsp;

	Sensory Stories

	Sensory Stories are a fantastic way to engage young people with complex special needs. They can become the favourite part of the day not only for the children but also for the adults facilitating the story too.

I told my first Sensory Story while working with a group of students with PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties) at Talbot Specialist School in Sheffield 2019. I drew on my early Artist Working in Special Education Training and also my experience of working with the blind and visually impaired learners. This was invaluable, especially as three of the students in this group had no vision at all.

Over the years I have built up an an impressive library of Sensory Stories and have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my skills in this area with both my classroom support staff and also visitors to the school.

I have simplified stories such as Roald Dahl’s ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and even rewritten stories if need be.

Sourcing appropriate props is both fun and a creative&#38;nbsp; challenge. I always try to ensure that I can incorporate props that cater for my students’ sensory tolerences, needs and interests.&#38;nbsp;
For example the props that I use when telling my Sensory Story version&#38;nbsp; in Eric Carle’s ‘The Tiny Seed’ includes; fans, ice, fake snow, sand, hot water bottles, water poured from a watering can, a feather boa, bird seeds sprinkled into trays, fabric flowers and floral aromatherapy oils.

&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/21b854df1d9eb44efcfd7d99a3d2b83460f74253fdfe1c44a26a09fa7d1a0d13/PXL_20251015_162538124.jpg" data-mid="239554014" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/21b854df1d9eb44efcfd7d99a3d2b83460f74253fdfe1c44a26a09fa7d1a0d13/PXL_20251015_162538124.jpg" /&#62;A sparkly mermaid tail to dress up in; a small mermaid doll to handle and a laminated symbolised book version with added glitter to give the page some textural interest

Sensory Stories have simplified language and focus more on how the story can be experienced through the senses. However, the storyteller can also make use of their voice to add drama, excitement and to build anticipation.

We made laminated books with symbols to match key words in the story.

This Granny had a helium balloon for her head: In our classroom telling of George’s Marvellous Medicine, her ribbon neck grew and grew until her head touched the ceiling!

We had trays of water with toy boats, toy fish in mini-frying pans and a big swishy swimming noodle was decorated to become jungle vines.

	Teaching: SEND student work 2019 - 2024

	While working as class teacher at NorthRidge Community School, Doncaster I continued to take a highly creative approach to making learning experiences as meaningful as possible to each of my students. To open up learning opportunities to these young people it is absolutely neccessary to take a person centred approach.&#38;nbsp;

While at NorthRidge Community School I was teacher of Mole Class KS2, Caterpillar Class KS2 and then Deer Class KS3 and KS4. These students all had severe learning difficulties. Most were Autistic (non verbal / non-speaking) and had complex sensory processing difficulties. &#38;nbsp;In 2023 I took on responsibility for the school’s Creative Curriculum (Art and Music) and facilitated a&#38;nbsp; successful whole school Arts Week in Jul 2023.

Having a rigid shape to push the tissue paper into was a successful scaffolding method which made this creative task more achievable for several students.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>
	Special Needs and Disabilities

	My
route into teaching has been driven by my interest in Neurodiversity. I am
passionate about finding ways to; connect with; to build trusting relationships
with and to empower people, so that they are better able to progress their own
unique learning journeys.

My journey
into Special Needs teaching began in 2010 with, Working Parts, an excellent
training programme for artists working in special schools and my work at Penn Hall
Special School, Wolverhampton, was then featured in Black Country Touring's
Arts Council England funding evaluation video.&#38;nbsp;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vycqP9Czimk

Since relocating to South Yorkshire in 2014 I completed a (PGCE) Post Graduate Certificate of Education at Sheffield Hallam University
and have gone on to become a Special Needs Teacher working with young people with complex additional needs. &#38;nbsp;
While working on-supply assignments (Sept 2018 - Sept 2020) I worked both as a Teacher and as a Learning Support Assistant in a range of special schools across South Yorkshire.&#38;nbsp;
I have a wealth of experience of working with young people with
ASC (Autistic Spectrum Condition). This gained firstly through my two years as
Textile Teacher at Brantwood Specialist School, a Steiner inspired special
school and part of&#38;nbsp; The Ruskin Mill Trust. Students there have diagnoses of ASC, complex sensory profiles, heighted anxiety and some also with PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance).Building on this initial Autism experience I have completed training via University of Bath, Good
Practice in Autism Education and taught on-supply at Robert Ogden School (National Autistic Society).

&#60;img width="2592" height="1936" width_o="2592" height_o="1936" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7f1e9e2e80c5758e3bfca8137d02d7cd4c32bd32101f923fb28f0d09760f0eec/A-Snake01.JPG" data-mid="76073407" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7f1e9e2e80c5758e3bfca8137d02d7cd4c32bd32101f923fb28f0d09760f0eec/A-Snake01.JPG" /&#62;A very special first session while working as part of the teaching team at Sheffield Children’s Hospital&#38;nbsp;

&#60;img width="3163" height="2340" width_o="3163" height_o="2340" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/05ea7c39b2bc874996758bd001233ce0dd6c5d27c3329d4d5d635a691e111f30/KS4-textured-mats-Kelford11.jpg" data-mid="76073411" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/05ea7c39b2bc874996758bd001233ce0dd6c5d27c3329d4d5d635a691e111f30/KS4-textured-mats-Kelford11.jpg" /&#62;&#38;nbsp;Decision making and ownership of their individual work is always important.

During my time as Special Needs Teacher at NorthRidge Community
School it was recognised that I have particular strengths in working with young people who are often non-verbal and who also have complex sensory profiles. I was lucky enough to work with the Sensory Occupational Therapist who was in school on a weekly basis.
Working with
these students reminded me of my passion to work &#38;nbsp;with people with non neuro-typical
interpretations of the world. Previous experience in this area includes working
with older people living with Dementia and also working with young people
suffering from post operative brain trauma - Sheffield children's Hospital (2019).

I have now built an impressive library of resources for Sensory Stories
as I have found them such a fantastic resource when working with young people with complex needs. Everyone loves a story and I believe that a well resourced, planned
and presented one is hard to beat!

	&#60;img width="1183" height="887" width_o="1183" height_o="887" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e4352bf97459222077fdaa454388e07f8edf2a5ae4f16c0f8899e1502f45b6cd/water-and-magic-felted-ball1.png" data-mid="76073412" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e4352bf97459222077fdaa454388e07f8edf2a5ae4f16c0f8899e1502f45b6cd/water-and-magic-felted-ball1.png" /&#62;

	Creativity while Living with Dementia

Making things by hand can significantly boost people's
health and wellbeing. Learning new techniques, experiencing textures and colours
and sharing activities with a social
group can all generate a deep sense of wellbeing and belonging.

My training in the field of Dementia includes completing the&#38;nbsp;outstanding ‘Dementia Stars’ (Gold Level)&#38;nbsp;training, by Grace Stead from&#38;nbsp;Enrichment for the Elderly Sheffield 2025.

Prior to this I had attended the 2014 Creative Dementia Conference, Oxford (Creative Dementia Arts Network) and in addition I had been a participant in the wonderful drama sessions by Ladder to the Moon at the&#38;nbsp;Imagine a Difference: Visioning Day for practitioners wanting to explore creativity in relation to Dementia (Praxis Arts and Health network West Midlands)&#38;nbsp;2011.
In Autumn 2025 I started supporting at Burngreave Dementia Welcome Cafe in Sheffield.

Showcased Project :
The Joy of Making :
Wolverhampton Art
Gallery&#38;nbsp;During this seven week project I worked with participants from Penn Hospital's Older Adult Mental
Health Unit; Stowheath Day Centre and Wolverhampton ReThink to produce work to compliment artist, Helen Snell’s, solo exhibition. Helen had taken inspiration from the museum’s
collection of Polish paper-cuts.
 The community
exhibition was called The Joy of Making. It ran from Feb-April 2012 and it was&#38;nbsp; wonderful!

There is no doubt that creating with your hands has a very therapeutic and beneficial effect on people's wellbeing.

	Despite having no memory of the previous session A was a great 'joiner-in’ and  she came to every session&#38;nbsp; However, it was obvious that her body had some sort of memory;
I often say how felting is best learnt by doing and it was obvious that A’s body
remembered how to handle the wool fibres.

In the 6th week A rediscovered
her ability to plait and got very busy plaiting lengths of the fluffy merino
wool tops. This was a perfect opportunity to talk about memories of hairstyles from our childhoods.&#38;nbsp;

A’s independence grew noticeably over the weeks. At first she
was assisted by one of the occupational therapists, then she quickly showed her
individuality by deciding on colours and was happy to continue independently. I was delighted when she made some design
decisions including leaving her flowers with solid petals rather than cutting
them and when she made her plait and stitched it in a diagonal across her mat.

	&#60;img width="960" height="639" width_o="960" height_o="639" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bcaa6b9b1c2f84452c39dbe3d4e9394594e22962cb61646371f4dd8465776ae3/allsensesart-The-Joy-of-Making-hand-splint1.jpg" data-mid="76063122" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/960/i/bcaa6b9b1c2f84452c39dbe3d4e9394594e22962cb61646371f4dd8465776ae3/allsensesart-The-Joy-of-Making-hand-splint1.jpg" /&#62;&#38;nbsp;V was recovering after a stroke. She was delighted with the items that she made and quickly
revealed her personality and her enthusiasm for colour.&#60;img width="960" height="639" width_o="960" height_o="639" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a84c045ebd782890657c3188e14fd7ede0922d0e6cc5ccba4aee410e5fe4ef6b/allsensesart-The-Joy-of-Making-hands61.jpg" data-mid="76063128" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/960/i/a84c045ebd782890657c3188e14fd7ede0922d0e6cc5ccba4aee410e5fe4ef6b/allsensesart-The-Joy-of-Making-hands61.jpg" /&#62;photo

In the second week we
made small multi-coloured felted balls and some beads. L not
only made some beads but also spent some time arranging them around one of the
felted pieces that Occupational Therapist, Karen, had made in the previous week. I was interested to see how absorbed she got in this activity (she was singing as she
did it) and also that she didn’t feel constrained to arrange the beads in an
obvious flower pattern.

The first week that we
made felted mats with felted fringing was the only week that a lady
called J took park. She amazed the Occupational Therapist team by staying engaged
in the activity for much longer than she had in previous craft
activities. Her calm and happy expression showed that she was enjoying the sensory experience of working with the
soapy water and rubbing the wool fibres.&#38;nbsp;In the sessions there was often laughter
and on more than one occasion dancing too.It was wonderful to meet
up with the group members when they attended the opening event of The Joy of Making at Wolverhampton Art Gallery.&#60;img width="2848" height="2136" width_o="2848" height_o="2136" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/53881eb58bf34f9ea44386853b273a760c5f4bed872ffd1e802d57f5525ceec5/allsensesart-The-Joy-of-Making-exhibition21.JPG" data-mid="76063114" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/53881eb58bf34f9ea44386853b273a760c5f4bed872ffd1e802d57f5525ceec5/allsensesart-The-Joy-of-Making-exhibition21.JPG" /&#62;The exhibition was beautifully presented and included quotes from the participants which were captured while they were engrossed in the making process.

Not only did they benefit from taking part
in the craft activities but their wellbeing and feelings of self-worth also improved as a result of
seeing their own creations shown in one of the country's best regional art
galleries.

	Cosplay Garments by SEN students

Re-engaging young people
by devising personalised projects appropriate to their individual interests was an
incredibly rewarding experience. As each student's skill base grew their sense
of self-worth also blossomed. Sewing sessions became much needed therapeutic
input into these young people's lives.

	Prior to my PGCE I was the
Textiles Teacher at Brantwood Specialist School, Ruskin Mill Trust in Sheffield for two years.

As part of the Ruskin Mill Trust the school takes a holistic approach to learning and there is an emphasis on improving young people’s sense of self worth and wellbeing by first focusing on learning through physical activities and hands on craft. The complex young people that I taught had struggled in their previous educational settings. Almost all had an Autism diagnosis and raised levels of anxiety. Some had experienced adverse early life experiences (Trauma) and several students had pathological demand avoidance (PDA).

Each of my students had
their own very specific needs because of; their complex profiles. Building trust
and good working relationships was my first step.

Many of the students were
extremely disengaged as a result of their previous experiences of educational settings and so just getting them to be
comfortable enough to come to and also to stay in their sessions took
time.
The school is Steiner inspired and for that reason many of the students
were already quite familiar with the wet felt-making process. I had originally been employed as Textiles Teacher as a result of my wet feltmaking skills in particular however,
once the students realised that I had strong garment making skills they then
started to ask to do projects which would use those skills.
Textile Projects Included: making cosplay costumes, appliquéd football flags,
personalised sportswear, dressing-up superhero costumes, working with leather, candle
making and sculpting with wax, dyeing and hand spinning sheep’s fleece
and making matchstick sculptures.

Wet-Felting projects
included: large wallhangings,
puppets, cushions and two very accomplished hat projects (one a Top-Hat and the
other a Fedora).
This page is a showcase
of the machine sewn garments made by Young People while I was their teacher at Brantwood Special School.

But although the
students’ work and my teaching impressed OFSTED I believe that the main
achievement was the growth of each the student's self-worth and positive outlook on their own futures.&#38;nbsp;
In 2019 I was a temporary Teacher at Becton School; Sheffield Children’s Hospital Site.

A special First Machine Sewn project by a young lady in the Respiratory ward can be read about here.&#38;nbsp;

"Progress in practical subjects
including textiles, felt-making, and art based activities is at times
exceptional. This is due to the high-quality teaching, the
high expectations adults have of the pupils and the wide range of
resources available so pupils can freely explore their ideas and interests.”

	Mental Health

	I believe
that much of my success in working in this field is down to my; ability to read non-verbal
cues; flexibility and being able putting people at their ease so that
they feel comfortable enough to participate.

My first work
in the field of mental health was as a freelance artist devising and presenting
a summer project for young people in Mental Health wards at Birmingham
Children's Hospital in 2008. This then led to future projects both at the hospital
and also at the CAMHS unit in Birmingham.&#38;nbsp;
These young people included people
who were at risk of self-harming and others who were working to overcome
eating disorders including anorexia.

· &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 2008 All About Me:
Felted pictures and Footballer glove puppets - work exhibited as part of
ArtsFest 2008

· &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 2009 Summer
Project over four half-days: Felted flowers, jewellery and wall-hangings -
work exhibited as part of ArtsFest 2009

· &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 2010 Ward 7 Wall-Hangings
- Designs decided by the participants that took part on the day. Hello Kitty
and Muppet wall-hangings completed.

· &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 2012 Autumn
project: cushions, flowers and Christmas stockings.

I have been described
as having infectious enthusiasm and, using this along with my strong sense of intuition, I manage to draw-in,
even the most reticent of people, to my creative sessions with the minimum of
stress and anxiety.

	&#38;nbsp;Ensuring that everyone feels at ease; making sure that they have enough
attention but at the same time not so much that they feel too ‘under the
spotlight’ has been my approach when working with vulnerable
people of all ages.

Wet-felting is the ultimate sensory experience. You can feel the fibres change throughout the process.

	The rhythmical rubbing of wet wool fibres with warm
soapy water is also exceedingly calming especially for people who are dealing with heightened anxiety and mental health challenges.

Felting has
also been a fabulous medium for creative work in HOSPITAL and HEALTHCARE SETTINGS.

Between
2008 and 2012 I devised and facilitated summer projects at Birmingham
Children's Hospital.
Felting projects there covered small jewellery projects
through to glove puppets and wall hangings. Work produced was exhibited at Arts
Fest, some is on permanent display within the hospital and other smaller items were
kept by the participants (a positive reminder of their creative achievements
made during challenging times in their lives).

		<description>
	Nurture Interventions

	Wet-felting is an extremely soothing and relaxing process and this is without doubt the main reason that I have used it in so much of my work both in Education and in Healthcare settings.

One of my first
AllSensesArt Nurture Interventions was at Model Village Primary School. I worked with Y5 and
Y6 students every Friday for a full academic year.

We started off with short activities making things which could be taken home at
the end of each session and this then culminated in two large projects in the
final five weeks of the year.

&#60;img width="2490" height="1686" width_o="2490" height_o="1686" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5a57ff254f144cdbb2ab8e0a10d165e769e3ba33db73cb5bd78d18d06c3e0b45/Model-Village-nurture-AllSensesArt1.JPG" data-mid="76307097" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5a57ff254f144cdbb2ab8e0a10d165e769e3ba33db73cb5bd78d18d06c3e0b45/Model-Village-nurture-AllSensesArt1.JPG" /&#62;A wool version of the colour wheel. Mixing colours with fluffy sheep's wool is even more exciting than doing it with paint
&#38;nbsp;
	I use music, drama and story-telling to bring a project to life

	Y5 made a Fantasy
Superhero Wall-Hanging for their library and Y6 made the
really wonderful Nuno felted Den.

In my own practice www.kirstyesmith.co.uk I use textures, colour and sound and in my www.allsensesart.com work I often use music and a wide range of tactile and sensory materials.

This SuperHero wall hanging had so much going on; flying shoes, portals to escape to other dimensions, Dr Who's Tardis, DX wrestling, Excalibur and stretchy gloves that can go under doors. These ideas came from our first dramatic dressing-up session in the school library; that's when the students explored the idea of creating their own superheroes.

And before I'd left the school the TAs had already installed cushions and fairy lights inside this sensory den!

	The FireBird project at Wirksworth Primary School was a Nurture intervention with the goal of making the transition from Y2 infants up to Y3 Junior school 9 on a nearby site) a less daunting challenge. I was introduced to Wirksworth School by my Creative Partnerships contact who had been impressed by approach and ability to connect with young people in a previous KS2 project; The Sensory Weather Pod.

For the FireBird project I worked with a combined group of Y2 and Y3 pupils. Music from the FireBird ballet was played, mini-creatures from Koschei the Imortal's garden were made, a fabulous 3D felted firebird was created (where all the children contributed) and a beautiful little zig-zag book of the pupils’ bird drawings was made.

The Firebird was displayed in the bookshop as part of Wirksworth Arts Festival (so the pupils’ achievements were very public) and their self-esteem had grown while friendships with older pupils in the Junior school were nurtured. &#38;nbsp;
